Construction Worker Dies After Falling Into Water in New Haven

A construction worker who fell into the water while working at the Magellan Terminal Harbor fuel deposit site in New Haven on Tuesday afternoon has died.

William Klemenz died just after 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to officials from Yale-New Haven Hospital.

He had been on a raft, working on putting a barge, dock and moorings at the fuel deposit site when he somehow fell into the water around 10 a.m., officials said.

A construction worker is in critical condition after falling into the water while working on a project in New Haven on Tuesday afternoon.

Coworkers pulled him onto the raft by the time firefighters arrived and performed CPR on him.

First responders then took over when they got there and continued CPR, Matthew Marcarelli, chief of operations for the New Haven Fire Department, said.

"We used a crane to help us with the rigging to pull him out of the water and onto the barge," Marcarelli said.

Klemenz was then transported to the hospital in "extremely critical" condition. The nature of his injuries were not clear.

Marcarelli said the department received a 911 call on Tuesday from someone who reported the victim fell from a garage, but first responders determined that was not the case and investigators are working to figure out how Klemenz fell into the harbor.

They're also trying to determine whether his injuries were caused by swallowing water or the impact from falling.

Klemenz, who was in his 50s, was a long-time employee of Blakeslee Arpaia Chapman, a construction company out of Branford.

NBC Connecticut reached out to the man's employer, but Blakeslee Arpaia Chapman Officials declined to comment.
