Firefighters rescue a boy who got stuck in a metal roll-up gate in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Checkey Beckford reports (Published Friday, May 9, 2014)

A boy was taken to the hospital after he got stuck on a rolling metal gate in Brooklyn Thursday evening, authorities say.

The boy may have been playing on or near the gate on Skillman Avenue in Williamsburg when it suddenly activated, taking him to the top of the drum as it rolled up, according to FDNY Deputy Chief Vinny Mandala.

A witness said the boy was hanging from the top of the gate.

The boy was stuck for about 15 minutes before firefighters were able to free him with tools and airbags, according to Mandala.

The boy looked fine when he was brought down, the witness said.

The boy was transported by Hatzolah to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries to his leg and arm, and was listed in serious but stable condition.

Two years ago, a 12-year-old boy was crushed to death in Brooklyn when he got caught in an electronic roll-up gate.

Most mechanical gates in New York are set to freeze or come down the minute they detect excess weight, experts say. It's not clear if a gate malfunction was to blame in Thursday's incident, but power has been shut off as the investigation continues.
