Water service has been restored after a large water main break shut down part of Park Avenue in Bloomfield on Tuesday evening.
The 12-inch water main broke near the Carmen Arace Intermediate School just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to a spokesperson for the the Metropolitan District Commission, who said a break of this size could cause the road to buckle or collapse.
Water service was shut down around 7:50 p.m., affecting 31 homes on Park Avenue from Revere Drive to 321 Park Avenue, the Bloomfield Health Care Center nursing home, the Carmen Arace Intermediate School and the New Testament Church, according to MDC.
The water was out overnight, but was restored as of 5 a.m. on Thursday.
People in the area might experience some water with discoloration or cloudiness, which the MDC said is normal after a water main break. Residents should run cold water until the water becomes clear.
The road remains closed between Tyler Street and the west entrance of Carmen Arace Intermediate School, which is located at 390 Park Avenue.
MDC stayed in touch with school officials throughout the repair process, working to make the repairs. Students are not scheduled to return to Bloomfield Public Schools until Sept. 2.
It's not clear how the break affected operations at the nursing home, but on Tuesday evening, MDC officials said the Bloomfield Health Care Center might have needed to transfer out patients.
