58-Year-Old Man Dies After Walking Into Traffic in New Haven: Police

A 58-year-old man died after he stepped off a curb in New Haven on Friday night and into the path of a car, according to police.

Police responded to Ella T Grasso Boulevard, between Adeline and Frank streets, just before 10 p.m. Friday after a 31-year-old East Haven man called 911 and reported he hit a man who was walking in the road, police said.

Police identified the pedestrian as 58-year-old Manuel Bonilla-Torres and said he was in the road, suffering from significant injuries. An ambulance responded and rushed him to Yale-New Haven Hospital and Bonilla-Torres was pronounced dead there, police said.

The driver told police he was going south on the Boulevard and did not have enough time to stop when Bonilla-Torres stepped off the curb and walked into his travel lane. A witness who was traveling behind the driver gave investigators the same account, police said.

Police are waiting on forensic results, but said the driver was not intoxicated or speeding. His license is valid, the car’s registration and insurance are up to date and it appears the driver was not at fault.
