9-Year-Old Rescued From Chimney

A 9-year-old New Canaan girl had quite an ordeal Wednesday morning.

She climbed up on her roof, then into her chimney, where she became trapped, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Firefighters and police were called to the house on White Oak Shade Road at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. They found the girl stuck a good way down the chimney.

Crews disassembled the flue to try and free the child, the paper reported.

"After repeated attempts, they actually got her to work herself out," New Canaan Assistant Fire Chief Jack Hennessey told the paper. "She was small enough that she was able to wiggle down through the opening and come out through the fireplace."

The young girl was not hurt, but it could have been a lot worse. "This is very unusual. Particularly since she made it all the way from the top to the bottom without getting stuck. Thank God she went down feet first so she wasn't hanging upside down," Hennesseey said.
