New Haven Attack 911 Calls Released

Officials said Occupiers jumped in to help the victim.

Just after 2 a.m. on March 18, New Haven 911 dispatchers started receiving calls reporting that Michael Farrington was being attacked by two members of group he had exchanged words with.

On Tuesday, those calls were released.

Operator: New Haven 911. What's the address of your emergency?

Caller: Um, there seems to be a beating on the street of --- Where we are now? Elm and Park? Yeah Elm and Park. There are a group of individuals who are thumping a victim.

But the attack didn't happen on Elm and Park streets, it was on College Street, right outside the Occupy New Haven camp.

Some of the Occupiers jumped in and helped Farrington while 911 callers tried to describe the situation to dispatch.

Operator: Do you see any weapon?

Caller: No, I don't see any victims.

Operator: OK. You don't see any weapons?

Caller: No, we don't.

Operator: OK, hold on for the police. Don't hang up.

Caller: Alright.

The calls coming in were fuzzy, but police said they did dispatch an ambulance and officers to the scene. However, it was the wrong address and police couldn't call the 911 caller back.

Operator: Would you like to leave your name and number?

Caller: Um, no that's fine.

The next caller gave a better location. Farrington said he had given his cell phone to one of the Occupiers, who also called 911.

Caller: Hi, we need an ambulance on College Street in New Haven.

Operator: College. College and what?

Caller: Uh, College and what are we on?

The Occupiers were able to chase off the attackers and get a license plate of their vehicle. Others stayed with Farrington until an ambulance arrived.

Caller: We need an ambulance. Someone just got beat up. His head really hurts pretty bad, so just send an ambulance.

Operator: Are you with her now?

Caller: Yes, we're right here.

Operator: Is she awake and breathing?

Caller: Yeah, he's awake.

Farrington said he didn’t speak to police until after he was released from the hospital and it has taken more than a week for them to request his statement and pictures of his injuries.

According to police, the incident is under investigation and no arrests have been made.
