Baby of Pregnant Mom Killed in I-95 Crash Dies

The newborn baby delivered by emergency C-section after her mother was killed in a car crash in Stonington has died, according to hospital officials.

Police said the mother, 26-year-old Alexandra Brown of Niantic, was driving southbound on Interstate 95 near exit 91 when her car veered to the left and struck a metal rope guardrail around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Brown was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car, according to the police report.

She was rushed to Westerly Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

In an effort to save her baby, doctors performed an emergency C-section and Maya Christiana Brown was born.

Maya was transferred to Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, where she was listed in critical but stable condition.

Officials from the hospital said the baby died last night.
