CL&P Builds Osprey Nest in Beacon Falls

Utility erected a platform for ospreys to lure them away from utility poles.

Connecticut Light and Power is getting into the bird sanctuary business.

The utility company erected a platform for ospreys in Beacon Falls Friday.

Ospreys like high places to build their nests. Unfortunately, that often means they build them on the tops of CL&P utility poles, where the nests can catch fire and cause power outages.

CL&P installed a specially built platform on top of a 60-foot utility pole at the intersection of Cold Spring Road, Black Forest Road and Lopus Street Extension to encourage the birds to relocate to the higher pole and away from the utilities lines.

CL&P  has successfully used the method in Branford, Niantic and other towns, according to company officials.
