3-Year-Old Shot in Bridgeport

The girl went through surgery and is OK, family members said.

A  3-year-old Bridgeport girl has undergone surgery after being shot in Bridgeport on Monday night and is doing OK, her family said.

The girl, who police said is Katelin Gordon, and Anthony Small, 20, were shot in a drive-by shooting at Maplewood Avenue and Poplar Street around 5:30 p.m, according to police.

Katelin was shot in the buttocks, according to a spokesperson for Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch.

When police arrived, Katelin was bleeding profusely and her mother was by her side, police said. Officers treated the little girl and tried to soother her until medical personnel arrived.

Small, police said in a news release on Tuesday, had incidents with shootings.

“This was an abhorrent act, one which displayed the most wanton disregard for the safety and security of our most vulnerable citizens – our children," Finch said in a statement. "It most assuredly was an illegal weapon that was used in the commission of this crime, and I am calling upon our federal lawmakers to close the loopholes that allow illegal guns onto our streets and into the hands of those who would commit such crimes."

Katelin was taken to Bridgeport Hospital and then transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital to be treated for what were described as non-life threatening injuries

Small was shot in the hand, police said.

Police are looking for a late-model gray sedan, possibly a Lincoln or a Pontiac, according to the spokesperson.  The car was believed to have four people inside at the time of the shooting.

The incident happened near Bryant School, which was locked down, but reopened after a short time.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this young victim and her family, and we hope that she makes a speedy recovery. We thank all those who have supplied information about this crime to the police, and we urge others to continue to do so,” Finch said.

Police said they are investigating to determine if the shooting was gang-related.
