Driver Charged With DWI After Hitting Bicyclist

A West Hartford woman has been charged with driving while intoxicated after hitting a bicyclist Wednesday evening, according to police.

Police said 67-year-old Cynthia Simpson was driving with a blood alcohol content of .09 when she crashed into 29-year-old bicyclist Nathan Nokes, of Washington state.

According to police, Nokes was riding his bike on Fern Street and tried to turn left onto North Main Street when Simpson, who was turning from Fern Street onto North Main Street, crossed over the center line and struck Nokes around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Nokes was knocked onto the hood of Simpson's car and fell to the ground, according to police. He complained of soreness but refused medical treatment.

Police said Nokes was wearing proper reflective gear at the time of the crash. His bike was heavily damaged, and Simpson's car sustained damage to the hood and front end.

Authorities tested Simpson's blood alcohol content and determined it to be .094 and .091, according to police.

Simpson was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to drive in a proper lane. She was released on bond.
