Police Investigate School Death as Accidental Drowning

Marcum Asiamah was participating in a supervised swim class, police said.

East Hartford police continue to investigate the death of an East Hartford High School student as an accidental drowning.

Marcum Asiamah, a 15-year-old freshman at the school, died after an incident at the East Hartford High School pool on Jan. 11.

The medical examiner ruled his death asphyxia due to submersion, the medical examiner ruled. 

Asiamah drowned in the school pool during a physical education class. Police said he was found unconscious in the deep end of the pool while participating in a supervised swim class.

Asiamah was pulled from the water and school staff began CPR, police said. Asiamah was brought to Connecticut Children's Medical Centerm where he was pronounced dead at 1:20 p.m.

Supt. of Schools Mark Zito said the pool will remain closed during the investigation.
