Eighth Grader Collapses, Dies During Basketball Game

Police say he suffered a seizure

An eighth-grade student from South Windsor collapsed and died Thursday night while playing a basketball game.

Kenny Offiaeli, 13, who attended South Windsor's Timothy Edwards Middle School, was playing in a game at Sage Park Middle School in Windsor, where he might have been trying out for an Amateur Athletic Union basketball team when he collapsed, according to the Journal Inquirer.

Windsor police Captain Thomas LePore told the Journal Inquirer that Offiaeli suffered a seizure and when police arrived, he had no pulse.

Police attempted CPR with a defibrillator before paramedics arrived, but attempts to revive Offiaeli weren't successful, he said.

He would have turned 14 at the end of April. The oldest of four children, he had three younger sisters.

Friday morning, a crisis team gathered at the school to be there for friends and to inform students who had not already heard about the tragedy, the Courant reports.

"The middle school is a somber place this morning," Superintendent Robert E. Kozaczka told the Courant. "I didn't know the young man, but as I walked around the building this morning (he was described as) very likable, always smiling and part of a close-knit group of friends."

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Saturday.
