Gift Puppy Eases Pain After Dog Attack

Pet shop donates a puppy when a dog is killed in attack

Just three weeks after their 7-year-old dog Ruby was attacked and killed by two other dogs, the Naeher family of Seymour met their brand new puppy, Dunkin.

Jerry Pleban, the owner of the All Pets Club store. watched their story on NBC Connecticut, and decided to help out and donated a cute cavalier-bichon frise mix to the Naeher's.

"My puppy had the same situation," Pleban said. "I just thought it was the right thing to do."

His dog, however, survived and decided to do something to help.

Donna Naeher says the puppy is the perfect addition to the family.

"I don't think anything could bring Ruby back, but I think this really is a highlight," she said.

The new dog ends a difficult chapter for the Naeher family. Their dog Ruby was attacked and killed by the neighbor's pit bull and rottweiler on Sept. 1 when a visiting foreign exchange student let the dogs out to play. The other dogs came onto the Naeher's property and attacked. Town officials said they were not able to do anything.

John Naeher was outraged.

"To have our property invaded in that way and that our dogs were playing on our property to be killed in that manner was terrible," he said.

The Naeher family persisted, and finally the town agreed to label the two dogs as vicious. The pit bull and rottweiler now must meet certain standards before they are allowed home.

"The town of Seymour really stepped up through education and information," Donna Naeher said.
