Fire Damages North Branford Elementary School

A North Branford elementary school was damaged by a fire over the weekend, but firefighters and repair crews worked quickly to ensure school was in session Monday.

Fire broke out at the Totoket Valley Elementary School on Middletown Avenue around 10 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported, but the fire damaged the school’s roof and boiler room.

North Branford Superintendent Scott Schoonmaker told NBC Connecticut on Saturday that officials hoped to have school Monday, and were waiting to see how repairs went. He praised the fire department for the way they handled the call.

“I’m amazed at how quickly they were able to cut the roof away, get in, extinguish the fire and then make it safe so that we could start repairs today," he said.

Schoonmaker said they believe the fire was caused by an overheated exhaust fan in the boiler room. The necessary repairs to the roof were made and the heat was working properly in time for class on Monday.
