So much for freshman orientation.
Connecticut’s newest Congress member, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-Greenwich, has been in office just days but his workload looks like it will include some of the toughest challenges this country is facing, including the housing crisis.
Himes will serve on the Housing and Community Opportunity subcommittee, as well as the Capital Markets, Insurance and Government Sponsored Enterprises subcommittee – which will deal with U.S. capital markets, the securities industry and the insurance industry. It also deals with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
While the issues will not be easy, these are issues to which Himes is no stranger, Liz Kerr, spokesperson for Himes, said.
“Congressman Himes has been preparing for this role his entire professional career,” she said.
He worked for Goldman Sachs & Co., as well as Enterprise Community Partners, which dealt with special urban housing issues, among others.
He understands the technical side of what the country is facing in a practical way, Kerr said.

Himes sees this as a chance to work on the issues that are most important to families right now and prepare for some long-term growth, she said.
Himes has been assigned to the Financial Committee and more assignments are forthcoming, Kerr said.
