A video taken by Hometown Heroes Connecticut this weekend shows Vietnam veteran John Smith from Woodbridge rolling out of his home in his wheelchair on his brand new ramp.

Until Saturday, Smith couldn’t get out of his home without someone to carry him down his front steps. Thanks to House of Heroes Connecticut, he doesn’t have to worry about that anymore.

They built him the ramp so he can safely get in and out of his house.

House of Heroes had their second annual Veterans Day breakfast fundraiser at Eli’s on Whitney in Hamden on Sunday morning, so that they can help more veterans like John.

The event included a full breakfast buffet, music, raffles and other activities for the family to enjoy and support our veterans on this Veterans Day weekend.

“Every job is different, every veteran is different,” House of Heroes Connecticut chairman Carol May said. “But the gratitude is always there, and we sleep better at night knowing that we’ve been able to help them.”

House of Heroes Connecticut provides home repairs to military and public safety veterans, and their spouses, who are disabled, living on a fixed income, or facing other physical and financial challenges. The work is all at no cost to the veteran.
