Hybrid Buses Debut in Connecticut

The large-capacity buses begin running in the Hartford area Wednesday.

Ten new hybrid-electric buses will run on the streets of Hartford beginning Wednesday.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation unveiled its larger capacity hybrid buses Tuesday. The 57-seat buses have a flexible accordion linking the front and rear sections.

“This is an important step in making this transportation system one of the most environmental friendly in the country, if not certainly in the East Coast,” said James Redeker, state Department of Transportation Commissioner. The buses meet the Federal Environmental Protection Agency’s near-zero emissions requirements.

The ten buses cost $813,100 dollars each, fully funded through federal grants.  The buses are the first of their kind to operate in Connecticut.

Two of the buses will begin service Wednesday in the Hartford area. The remaining eight will be rolled out throughout the year.
