Family Hospitalized After I-84 W Crash

A major accident involving a pickup towing a camper trailer shut down two lanes of traffic on Internet 84 westbound on Sunday evening, police said.

The accident happened around 6 p.m. just before exit 67 in Tolland, closing the middle and far right lanes for hours.

The truck, containing a family of four, was swerving in the middle lane when the driver lost control, officials said.

The truck veered to the right, going off the road and up an embankment and flipped onto its hood, trapping three passengers underneath.

The trailer became detached and rolled onto its side, blocking the far right lane.

Emergency responders flipped the truck back over and ripped off the hood to free the passengers.

Life Star flew the husband to Hartford Hospital, Tolland Fire Chief John C. Littel said.

The wife and two children were transported by ambulance. There is no report of the extent of their injuries.

The road reopened just before 11 p.m., according to an alert from the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
