Malloy Aide to Talk With Unions About Rules

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is directing his chief labor negotiator to reach out to the state employee unions and discuss how they plan to change their process for approving a labor savings and concessions agreement.

Malloy told The Associated Press on Thursday that he "needs to understand what a road to an approval process is" and whether there will be any clarifications made to the current rules.

If the same rules remain, Malloy questioned whether more talks with the unions are justified.

A savings deal failed last month even though 57 percent of voting unionized workers supported the agreement. Union rules require a high threshold to make any changes to current retirement and health care benefits.

Malloy now faces having to lay off about 6,500 workers.
