Man Accused of Stealing Motorcycles in West Haven

West Haven police arrested a man accused of stealing motorcycles after finding a stolen bike, a bolt cutter and a screwdriver in a rented U-Haul, early this morning.

Police officers first noticed the GMC U-Haul rental truck driving near Campbell Avenue in West Haven at 2:42 a.m., police said.

Soon after, officers on a routine patrol noticed the truck on Graham Manor, just off Savin Avenue They drove around and then noticed that the truck had been moved across the street, according to Sergeant David Tamarro.

The back door was open and police saw a 2008 Yamaha motorcycle inside, so additional officers responded.

As police approached the U-Haul, Raymond Martinez, of Bridgeport, started walking away and police detained him, police said.

On the sidewalk not far away, police also saw a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle and a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle.

Officers reached out to the owners and learned the bikes had been stolen from Savin Avenue.

Police returned the stolen property to the rightful owners after taking photographs of the evidence.
Police said Martinez had rented the U-Haul and they found a set of bolt cutters and a screw driver inside.

The Yamaha was towed to Sallyport for processing and Martinez was charged with three counts of larceny, possession of burglary tools and motor vehicle charges.
