Police Make Big Drug Arrests During Traffic Stops

Police said they smelled marijuana and one man was drinking as police approached.

Middletown police made two drug arrests during traffic stops on Sunday and Monday and said they found about $16,000 worth of illegal narcotics.

On Sunday, an officer and a K9 pulled over Carlos Clarke, 27, of East Hartford, because his
black Toyota Camry was blocking the intersections of Pearl and Liberty streets, police said.

When the officer approached the car, he smelled marijuana, police said.

When the officer searched the car, he found 1.2 pounds of marijuana packaged for sale, worth about $6,000, police said. Police tested the substance, which was positive for THC, police said.

Clarke admitted that the narcotics were his, police said.

Police said he also had $376 in cash and seven cell phones, in addition to the drugs.

He was taken into custody and charged with operating a drug factory, possession of drug paraphernalia and additional charges.

Clarke was held in lieu of a $75,000 and is due in court on April 13. Two other people were in the car when police arrested Clarke.

On Monday evening, an officer approached the car Marquis Williams, 35, of New Haven, was driving because of a minor traffic violation and smelled marijuana, police said.

Inside the car, police found more than $10,000 worth of drugs, including more than 6 ounces of suspected marijuana, more than 1 ounce of suspected heroin, drug paraphernalia, three cell phones and approximately $2,400 in cash, according to a news release.

Police said Williams was also drinking from a bottle of beer when the officer approached.

Williams was taken into custody and charged with drug possession charges, operating a drug factory, driving while drinking and additional charges.

Williams posted bond and is due in court on April 13.
