Newtown Woman Sentenced in $1.5M Embezzlement Case

Joanne Osmolik took business cash for personal expenses, officials said.

A Newtown woman accused of embezzling more than $1.5 million from her employer who pleaded guilty to a wire fraud charge has been sentenced and company officials said they are grateful to investigators.

Joanne Osmolik, 51, worked as a vice president for human resources at Latex International in Shelton where she and another manager allegedly used corporate credit cards for personal expenditures, then covered it up with fraudulent expense reports, federal prosecutors said.

Company officials said in a news release on Thursday that she stole more than $1.75 million from the company.

“Osmolik and her co-conspirator recklessly pillaged Latex International purely for their own benefit, while having no regard for the employees, customers and shareholders of our company who suffered as a result of their actions. It has taken the new management team several years to pull itself out of the painful financial morass that these criminals caused our company. We are pleased they have finally been brought to justice,” Latex International President and Chief Executive Officer Dave Fisher said.

As part of an agreement with prosecutors, Osmolik must forfeit her stake in three residential properties in Vermont, six motorcycles, four snowmobiles and jewelry.
