K9 Fundraiser in Newington Is Legitimate

A telemarketing mistake caused some confusion about telephone calls soliciting donations for a group that works with police dogs.

Newington police on Wednesday issued a warning for people not to donate money if they received a call asking to help the Newington Police K-9 program.

After investigating, police determined that the calls were on behalf of Connecticut Police Work Dog Association, which was soliciting donations.

The organization is reputable, according to Newington police, and the department works with the group on training.

"The way in which they represented their intentions to solicit donations for their organization was a mistake by their telemarketing partner. There will be no criminal charges filed and C.P.W.D.A. will continue to solicit donations," Newington police said in a release.
