Quiet! No More Flapping at Union Station

A familiar sight and sound at New Haven's Union Station is going away.

That unique message board, a staple here since 1984, that's controlled by a computer in a back room.

The old-fashioned "message board" will be replaced with a new, high tech LED board and not everyone is pleased with what passes for progress.

Its familiar sound has become a friendly reminder to look up, says Carol Mainville of Meriden, "I go okay something’s changed, lets take a look."

But there are plans in place to give union station a $5 million dollar upgrade and one of the first things to go will be this beloved board.

"I just don’t understand why they have to change ... everything's electronic, you can’t talk to people anymore," explains an upset Melissa Villano.

The new board will be electronic, hold more lines and display more information.  It's a much needed update for frequent travelers like Mainville, "I think new technology is always fine so I just go with the flow, so long as I get the information I need."

For others like Villano who grew up in Connecticut but now lives in New York City, it’s a reminder of home.  "It gives that history and sense of how things used to be back in the day," she says.

An exact date has not been set on when the new board will go up, but one Amtrak officials estimates it won't be for another few months.
