Rell Slams the Brakes on DMV Fees

Gov. M. Jodi Rell is getting set to pick up her veto pen again.

This time, she's going after a bill that hiked DMV fees by $50 million -- a move Rell called "incredible" as it comes less than a month after they passed a budget that included about $1 billion in fee and tax increases.

Democrats, who control the Legislature, say the hikes are necessary to cover rail subsidies and programs their party and the governor agreed to a few weeks ago.

Speaker of the House, Chris Donovan, issued a statement Friday saying the $2 per year increase to license renewals was "to pay for things [Rell] wanted added back to the budget".  He continued, saying the state doesn't need "these bizarre rejections of her own ideas."

Lawmakers have postponed Friday's planned sessions on the remaining state budget bills until next week.

They're still going at it to finish several bills that actually spell out the tax and spending plans.
