Smoke Inhalation Killed Bridgeport Firefighter

Autopsy results for Michel Baik show the Bridgeport firefighter died of smoke inhalation.  Baik, and Lt. Steven Velasquez were trapped inside a home on Elmwood Avenue when part of the roof collapsed Saturday afternoon.

A cause of death for Velazquez was still pending Monday morning.

The men were part of Ladder 11, that answered the call to a fire in the home around 5 p.m. Saturday.  They went in to search the home for victims and were venting the ceiling when part of it came down on top of them.

Fellow firefighters received two mayday calls, and tried to revive their fallen brothers, but couldn't.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell ordered flags to fly at half-staff until further notice.

Funeral arrangements for Lt. Velasquez and Baik have not been announced.

The Bridgeport Fire Department and Bridgeport Firefighters Local 834 have established a fund to support the families of fallen firefighters.

Donations can be sent to the "Bridgeport Fallen Firefighters Fund" through the Bridgeport Fire Department Employees Credit Union at 3115 Madison Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06606.  Calls can be made to the credit union at 203-374-8120.
