New Rules Ensure Smooth Sailfest

Police prohibiting pets, coolers and large bags

Police in New London will be enforcing some new rules to make sure it's "smooth sailing" at this year's Sailfest.

The annual, three-day event starts on Friday and includes amusement rides, vendors and a major fireworks display. The festival brings in more than 300,000 people to New London.

Police said the new rules at this year's Sailfest are meant to ensure public safety and to avoid any inconvenience for people.

They include: no pets, other than service animals, at Waterfront Park or other densely populated areas.

No coolers or large bags will be allowed on the Waterfront Park either, to avoid concerns over abandoned bags and packages.

Police are reminding drivers that roads leading into downtown will be closed as early as 5 p.m. during the festival. The roads may be closed earlier, depending on the amount of traffic. All downtown garages will be open, but the municipal parking lots will be closed.
