Waterbury Pools to Stay Open at a Price

Pools in Waterbury will be open this summer, but providing a relief from the heat for some, may mean pink slips for others.

With the city looking to cut its budget and keep taxes down, they've made a choice to eliminate four municipal jobs instead of closing the pools for the summer, according to the Waterbury Republican-American.

A landscape architect, two mechanical equipment operators and a janitress would all lose their jobs, the paper reported.

Public Works director John Lawlor presented the plan to the Board of Aldermen's budget committee Wednesday. 'I don't want to do this," Lawlor told the committee. "This will cut deep."

It's not a done deal yet. The committee hasn't officially adopted a budget recommendation. It's waiting for a blue-collar union vote Sunday that could result in concessions in exchange for a promise not to cut any blue collar jobs, according to the paper.

The budget committee is scheduled to continue debate on cuts Thursday night.
