Families Enjoy Kids Health and Safety Day in Middletown

Hundreds of families enjoyed the Saturday sunshine on Middletown’s Main Street as part of the annual Kids Health & Safety Day. It was an opportunity for the whole family to have some fun while learning important safety and wellness lessons and getting free health screenings.

Skylar Valentin from Middletown said she came for the cotton candy.

And 4-year-old Gavin Ivanac came to meet his hometown heroes. “When I grow up I wanna be a firefighter,” said Ivanac proudly while sitting at the wheel of a Middletown firetruck.

But the main goal of Middletown Kids Health & Safety day is to create a safer and healthier town.

“We’re here to check out the services they have and sign Cole up for some things,” said parent Troy Farrand from Cromwell.

There’s all kinds of fun for kids in Middletown on Saturday. It’s the annual Kids Health and Safety Day.

Middletown Fire Chief Robert Kronenberger said the day is a team effort.

“It’s just truly a good community event, it’s put on by pretty much all the city agencies – police department, fire department, health department. And we bring incredible partners to help us out,” said Chief Kronenberger.

Lieutenant Desmond from the Middletown Police Department is also part of the committee that’s been planning this day for months.

“We get to teach the kids how to be safe not just with police and fire, but there’s a little bit of everything,” Lt. Desmond said.

Kids and their parents learned about exercise and nutrition and even got free vision and dental screenings from local doctors.

“We are giving out toothbrushes and talking about brushing and just urging parents who maybe don’t know to take their kids to the dentist as early as age 1,” said Dr. Erica Pitera from Sweet Tooth Pediatric Dentistry in Middletown.

At the Bike Rodeo, little riders got free bike inspections and helmets. And at the NBC Connecticut stand, little weather fans got to meet Snow Monster in the flesh.

NBC Connecticut and Telemundo CT are proud media sponsors of this annual event.
