Another Excuse to Skip The Gym

The Bally Total Fitness location on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden is closing its doors.

The company says the center will close June 26 as part of company efforts to emerge from bankruptcy protection. Nationwide, 26 of its roughly 300 locations will shut down, according to spokesman Larry Larsen.

The company is offering Hamden customers a complimentary upgrade that allows nationwide gym access, said Larsen.

The closure caught many customers by surprise. "I'm not thrilled about it obviously. I'm sure it's for economic reasons," said Bill Suerken of East Hampton.

Anyone who runs into trouble getting a refund from Bally Total Fitness can apply to the state's Gym Guaranty Fund, said Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. The fund can help customers get their money back when gyms suddenly close, including when those facilities have filed for bankruptcy, Blumenthal said.
