Bobcats Spotted in Farmington Yard

Abhisha John

A Farmington family was a little surprised by a trio of bobcats walking through their front lawn on Thursday morning.

The animals are not uncommon in Connecticut, but Abhisha John, 17, was surprised when the cats showed up in the yard, likely from woods behind the house.

There have been a few more sitings across the state in the last week or two, possibly because they show up more in the white background created by snow, Paul Rego, a wildlife biologist with the state Department of Environmental Protection, said.

Unlike some animals that hibernate, bobcats stay active through the year and they are heading toward mating season.

Bobcats rarely attack pets, Rego said.

They do go after fowl, including chicken and ducks.
