Driver Arrested in Bertocki Hit-and-Run

East Hartford police have made an arrest in a hit and run that killed a motorcyclist eight months ago.

Police said Mark Williams, 50, of Andover was driving the tractor-trailer that struck Brian Bertocki, 40, just after midnight on June 4, 2008.

When police responded to the crash, Bertocki was in the road at Roberts and Hillside streets. Kathleen Bevilacqua, the passenger on the motorcycle, sustained minor injuries. She said a red tractor-trailer had struck their motorcycle and left the scene.

Bertocki’s friends and business partners offered a $10,000 reward for those who might know something and hung posters all over the city looking for answers. They started Web sites and the Brian Bertocki Memorial Fund.

Detectives and investigators investigated, found the tractor-trailer they believed was involved and issued an arrest warrant for Williams.

In July, police seized the tractor-trailer they believed to be involved to gather evidence and conduct forensic tests.

Williams has been charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, evasion of responsibility in operation of a motor vehicle and reckless driving.

Williams has been released on a $10,000 non-surety bond. He will be arraigned in Manchester Superior Court on Feb. 23.
