Fitness Fanatics Plan Workouts Around Scorching Temps

As temperatures continue to bake the state, fitness fanatics and gym owners are adjusting to make sure the heat doesn't have them missing a workout.

At CrossFit Relentless in West Hartford, athletes are expected to be ready to endure. With temperatures stretching well into the 90's, coaches and athletes said "endurance" becomes strategic.

"We have a big fan right behind you. We have ceiling fans. A couple of big fans just trying to keep some airflow going on in the gym. We keep the door open to allow a breeze in here," said Owner Erik Castiglione.

Castiglione said in his gym, having a sharp eye is crucial when beating the heat.

"We keep an eye on their form. If anyone looks like they are disoriented will have them stop the workout, get them out of the heat, and get them some water," said Castiglione.

Kaylee Yacono is visiting from Savannah, Georgia and said these past few scorching days has been a hot reminder of where she's from.

"It's almost like I didn't leave home," chuckled Yacono.

While endurance and being all out relentless is the focus at this gym, hot days or not preparedness athletes admit allows them never to miss a lift.

"We are pushing hard anyway. Body temperatures are rising, we want to keep everybody safe, we want to keep everybody hydrated," said Castiglione.

"It's already going to be hard enough not to pass out when it's this hot. Make sure you're preparing your body for any normal workout just be cognizant of the fact that it's going to be hot too," said Yacono.

Coaches said drinking water is a good start, also monitoring your heart rate is important. Wearing lighter clothes while working out works best for keeping body temperatures down, according to coaches.
