Groton Police Arrest Domestic Violence Suspect, Area Lockdowns Lifted

Groton Town Police have arrested a man after a domestic violence incident on Friday morning.

Officers responded to Midway Oval and Ivy court around 6:05 a.m. for a report of a threatening incident involving a gun. Before police arrived, the male suspect, later identified as 56-year-old Leroy Hackett, fled the scene, officers said.

Patrol officers flooded the area and created a perimeter to search for him. K9 units from Groton Town and Waterford Police Department and members of Amtrak Police Department were called to assist in the search.

Grasso Tech High School, Claude Chester Elementary School and TVCCA Childcare and Preschool Center were placed into lockdown out of an abundance of caution, police said.

After an extensive search, officers found Hackett in the Poquonnock Bridge area of town. He was taken into custody without incident. Police said the firearm was later discovered to be a BB gun. Officers found it and seized it.

Hackett is being charged with charges including threatening, interfering with an officer and disorderly conduct. He is being held in police custody on a $50,000 bond and will be in court on July 9.
