Community Raises $24K for Attack Victim

Doctors and nurses deal with tragedy almost every day, but an attack last on a waitress from Hamden left medics shaken and a nurse at Yale New Haven Hospital organized "An Act of Kindness," a one-day fundraiser that raised more than $24,000 to help the victim's recovery. And the money continues to come in.

"It was beyond what you could think," Ivette Medina-Stephenson, a high-risk maternity nurse, said.

She saw stricken doctors treat the waitress who was attacked in East Rock Park in March, attacked, beaten and left for dead. 

To help in the woman’s recovery, Medina-Stephenson appealed to Tatzza's Coffee Roaster in Cheshire workers and bartenders to donate a portion of their tips on May 1.

Medina-Stephenson said Eli's on Whitney in Hamden agreed to collect donations from the public and the hospitality industry.

Dozens and dozens of restaurants in the New Haven and Hartford areas also participated.  According to the organizers, these include:

Jose Angel Moreno-Hernandez, who worked with the victim at Temple Grill in New Haven, was charged with attempted murder.  Moreno-Hernandez is accused of asking the woman for a ride home after work last Friday morning, and attacked her repeatedly before she played dead and he left in her car.

The victim has been released from the hospital.
