Norwich Teen Killed in Rhode Island Crash

A Norwich teen was killed in an accident in Rhode Island Thursday.

Richmond, Rhode Island police say Grace Hanlon, 16, was riding in a Jeep Wrangler operated by her father, Paul Hanlon, 50, when they were struck head-on by a Chevrolet Impala on Kingstown Road (Route 183) in Richmond, Rhode Island. Both were extricated from the vehicle and transported to area hospitals. Grace Hanlon sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at South County Hospital. Paul Hanlon remains hospitalized at Rhode Island Hospital, according to police.

Police say the accident occurred around 12:11 p.m. when traffic slowed for a vehicle turning left onto Old Usquepaugh Road. The driver of the Impala did not stop in time and swerved into westbound traffic, colliding with a Lexus SUV and then hitting the Hanlon's Wrangler. The force of the crash caused the Wrangler to roll over.

Police say alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this crash. The occupants of the other two vehicles declined medical attention.

The operator of the Impala, Jared Bixby, 21, of Wilmington, North Carolina, was cited for leaving the lane of travel and following too close.
