Parents Outraged Over Mold at Elementary School

They say it's taking too long for the district to clean up the problem.

Some parents in Winsted have pulled their children out of the Hinsdale Elementary School over concerns that mold there is making them sick.

Cathy O'Meara said her daughter developed a serious sinus infection and their new allergist recommended they take her out of the school until the problem is cleaned up.

It all started last month after flooding in the area, according to O'Meara.

"We've never had allergy problems with her and to hold her out and be on nebulizer treatments three times a day as well as a barrage of heavy medications, it's upsetting. She's missing school. She's missing her friends. It shouldn't happen," O'Meara said.

Her daughter is now keeping up with her assignments at home and says she's feeling much better.

In response to concerns from parents, the district hired a Groton company to test the school's air quality.

Their report shows high mold levels were found in the gymnasium, which also serves as the school cafeteria. Elevated mold levels were also found in two other rooms.

The company recommended comprehensive cleaning and replacing of any materials showing water damage.

Parents say it's taking too long.

"More kids are getting sick. Children are coming down with pneumonia and they're just saying it's because of the season right now and it's not. It's just too coincidental," O'Meara said.

The superintendent did not respond to NBC Connecticut's requests for comment as of Monday evening.
