Police Ask for Witnesses to Willimantic Drive-By Shooting Attempt to Come Forward

Willimantic police are asking witnesses to come forward after a drive-by shooting attempt on Wednesday afternoon that prompted a school lockdown.

Police said they received several 911 calls around 3:30 p.m. reporting gunshots being fired from a car on Valley Street, not far from the Windham Early Childhood Center and just a few hundred feet from Windham Hopsital.

Police said two people were walking on the sidewalk when shots rang out, but they were not hurt.

"There were two pedestrians that were walking down the street, that reported a vehicle pulled up, shots were fired at the pedestrians," said Willimantic police spokesman Cpl. Stanley Parizo.

The Windham Early Childhood Center nearby at 322 Prospect Street was locked down, and police went to check on the children. It was lifted after about an hour.

Investigators recovered several spent shell casings, according to police.

Police are asking anyone who saw or heard anything to come forward with information.
