Pet cat killed in fire in Westport

Westport Fire

A pet cat died in a fire in Westport on Tuesday afternoon, according to the fire department.

Firefighters responded to a fire at a two-unit home on Compo Road South around 1:30 p.m. and found fire coming from the second floor.

All the people were out of the building and firefighters rescued one pet, but they found a pet cat dead inside.

The home is uninhabitable and residents were relocated to stay with family.

One resident received assistance from the Red Cross to relocate.

Fire officials said the fire department was already responding to the area after a large tree fell across the road, taking down power and utility lines, and this created an additional hazard.

The Westport fire marshal’s office is investigating the fire.
