The Hartford Yard goats have just one week left in their season, but in a slew of roster moves that started with Matt Holliday heading back to the big club in Colorado, the Yard Goats now have a catcher on their roster who's from Australia.
Robbie Perkins has been in the Rockies minor league system for the past five seasons, but he got the call up last week to come to Hartford.
Perkins says he’s been playing baseball since he was 7, even though its about as common in Australia as rugby is in America.
"It's definitely different,” said Perkins. “As I was playing as a kid, there was no expectations to turn pro or anything like that. I was just playing for fun. Got a little more serious once I turned 15-16 and it became a reality that I could do this for a living."
Perkins replaces Chris Rabago on the Yard Goats roster. Rabago was claimed on waivers from the New York Yankees after the Rockies needed to make space on their 40-man for veteran left fielder Matt Holliday.
