Boyle Looking Forward to Starting in ’15

QB Tim Boyle never thought about leaving the program.

Casey Cochran retired from football after suffering a concussion in Week 1. Chandler Whitmer is a senior and his college career will be over in three weeks. That leaves Tim Boyle, the sophomore who was forced into duty as a freshman and sees about a series a game in relief of Whitmer this year.

And when the Huskies take the field for the season opener in 2015 Boyle expects to be the starter. Partly because first-year coach Bob Diaco has called him UConn's future at quarterback, but also because, despite two pretty tough seasons, Boyle doesn't want to be anywhere else.

"Not even a thought in my mind about leaving," he said Tuesday, via the Hartford Courant. "One hundred percent, I'm staying."

Through six games, Boyle has completed 14 of 26 passes for 75 yards with two interceptions. He's expected to play against Saturday against Cincinnati and continue to gain experience that will hopefully serve him well when the job is his. Still, Boyle admits that playing just a series a game can be difficult.

"It's tough trying to keep a positive attitude, but the way I see it is I get to wake up and play football and go to school for free," Boyle said. "I don't see anything negative with that. I see playing one series in a game a blessing that I've got to get some game experience. Obviously I'd like to be playing more as a competitor but I'm completely and 100 percent OK with the decision he's making because it's what's best for the team right now -- and I can't be selfish in what I want to do. I have to understand what's best for the team," he told the Courant.

And that, in part, explains why Boyle is staying in Storrs.

"I've dedicated a lot of time and energy and passion to this program and I truly think Coach Diaco is the real deal and I think that we're actually, legitimately, going to go down a path of winning championships and I want to be a part of it," Boyle said. "I trust him 100 percent and I trust the players on this team. I think we're going to go places."
