An 89-year-old woman is dead and six other people were injured in a crash on Old Colchester Road in Salem on Friday, according to state police.
State police responded to a three-car accident near Witter Road around 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Before troopers arrived at the scene a fourth vehicle drove through the crash scene and hit the accident victims, who were standing outside their vehicles, according to police.
Two LifeStar helicopters were initially called to airlift one child and one adult to the hospital but helicopter was canceled, according to Quinebaug Valley Emergency dispatchers.
Carol McKeehan, 89, of Quaker Hill, was a passenger in the car that hit the other vehicles involved in the initial crash. McKeehan was transported to Backus Hospital and later pronounced dead.
The crashes both remain under investigation at this time and anyone who may have information is being asked to call Troop K at 860-465-5400.
