Violence Erupts Outside New Haven Nightclubs, 24-Year-Old Shot

Police say they received multiple reports of gunfire erupting near nightclubs in New Haven over the weekend, including one incident that left a 24-year-old man shot in the leg.

Officers responded to reports of two people shot after gunfire erupted outside the Exhibit X nightclub located on Center Street at the intersection with Orange Street early Sunday morning.

Police said Mandella Davis was shot in the leg. He was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening wound.

Officials also say a woman fleeing the area collapsed. They thought she had also been shot, but it turns out she had suffered a panic attack.

In another incident earlier this morning, not far from Exhibit X, officers say they received reports that a shot may have been fired inside the Lazy Lizard Nightclub on Crown Street near Temple Street, but conflicting reports indicated it may have just been the result of a bottle breaking.

The nightclub owner said the loud noise was the result of a champagne bottle breaking.

According to police, club-goers spilled onto Crown Street and fights broke out. Officers followed one group fleeing the scene and arrested a man outside the New Haven Hotel who they say had a pistol. Police haven't identified the man.

Police haven't clarified the exact cause of the incident.
