CIAC Rankings Shuffled After Berlin High School Football Forfeits Wins

There is more fallout from the cheating accusations involving the Berlin High School football team. Now students and staff at Rocky Hill High School say they’re being unfairly punished.

It had been a tough start for the Rocky Hill High School football team this season.

“But we came back and we strung together 6 straight wins. It gave us a chance to make the playoffs,” says Jason Carducci, a Rocky Hill captain.

The team’s latest win came against Berlin last week.

Rocky Hill says it came out with the 8th seed and was looking forward to a spot in the playoffs.

But a chance at the post-season is now much more difficult after the controversy involving Berlin.

“It was frustrating to say the least. Our kids worked hard all year and we told them all year if you take care of business on the field and do what we ask you to do, you know, things will work out for you,” says Mark Fritz, head football coach.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference – or CIAC – leveled its punishment against Berlin High School because of “ineligible player” charges. Berlin would have to forfeit its wins and that forced the rankings to be reshuffled.

Because of CIAC rules, Rocky Hill ended up losing points and dropped to the 9th seed. Its chances of making the playoffs are harder now.

“It’s pretty disappointing. I never thought we would get this close and for it to be taken away for some other team cheating. It just doesn’t make any sense to us,” says Carducci.

Rocky Hill still has a chance to make the playoffs but it requires among other things a win against Cromwell next week.
