Chappelle Tells Chicago Crowd He'll Never Come Back to Hartford

Comedian Dave Chappelle continues to harbor hard feelings against Hartford after refusing to perform and walking off stage in Connecticut last week.

At a show in Chicago on Tuesday night, Chappelle said, “I don’t want anything bad to happen to the United States, but if North Korea ever drops a nuclear bomb on this country, I swear to God, I hope it lands in Hartford, Connecticut.”

He told the Chicago crowd he'll never come back to Hartford.

Chappelle’s Hartford show was part of the Funny or Die Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival, touring 15 cities around the country.

He refused to perform his set in Hartford last week, saying he was “smoking a bad attitude” and citing heckling from the crowd as the reason behind it.

Chappelle said his contract required him to stay onstage for 25 minutes.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to say for 25 minutes,” he said during the set in Hartford.

Video footage from the performance shows that most audience members laughed at first, but as Chappelle’s set drew to a close, the theater erupted with boos and shouts.

“Man, this crowd sucks,” Chappelle said. “Security’s having a conference about how to get me out of here.”

Ebony Magazine suggests that Chappelle felt he was playing the part of the black entertainer charged with catering to a drunken white crowd.
