6-Year-Old Falls From Second-Story Window While Jumping on Bed in Hartford

A 6-year-old girl has been taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center after falling from a second-floor window while jumping on a bed in Hartford on Wednesday morning, according to police.

Police said the child was jumping near an open window at a home on Maple Avenue when she fell through the opening and landed on the ground 20-25 feet below.

"The little girl had fallen off the second-floor and went around to the door and knocked on the door, and she was crying, saying she was hurting," explained construction worker Jack Borges, who has been working on Maple Avenue with his crew for months. "I actually went inside when the lady was saying that the girl got hurt, and she was on the steps and she got crunched."

She was taken to Connecticut Children's Medical Center for treatment. Police said she did not appear to have suffered serious injuries.

Kevin Borup with the injury prevention center at Connecticut Children's said the case is unfortunately not uncommon. More than 5,000 children around the country are hospitalized each year for injuries related to window falls.

"What many people don't realize is those screens that are designed to keep bugs out are not designed to keep kids in, and if you push against that screen, a kid can very easily push against that screen and fall out of the window," he explained.

Borup urges parents to always supervise young children, move furniture away from windows and use window guards so kids can't accidentally fall.

The Hartford Police Department is investigating the child's fall.
