Couple Suspected of Shoplifting, Running Down Officer in North Haven Arrested

North Haven police have arrested a couple accused of shoplifting and then running down a police officer.

Workers at Ulta cosmetics store at 370 Universal Drive called police around 8 p.m. on Monday to report a man and a woman were taking perfume from the shelves and hiding it in a bag being held by the woman, according to police.

Officers arrived as the pair left the store and got into a gray BMW. As one of the officers approached the car, the driver sped toward the officer and hit him as the officer tried to jump out of the way.

The couple then fled on Interstate 91 South and got off exit 6 onto Willow Street.

Police said they identified the suspects on Tuesday as Edward Madden, 41, and Candice Lawrence, 35, both of New Haven, and took them into custody with help from New Haven Police.

Madden was charged with first-degree robbery, assault on a police officer, reckless endangerment in the first degree, larceny in the sixth degree, evading responsibility, disobeying an officer’s signal and reckless driving. He was held on a $200,000 bond and will be arraigned in Meriden Superior Court.

Lawrence was arrested at her home on Pendleton Street in New Haven and charged with conspiracy to commit assault on a police officer, conspiracy to commit robbery in the first degree and sixth-degree larceny.

Lawrence was held on a $100,000 bond and arraigned in Meriden Superior Court. Bond was set at $200,000.

Lawrence was arraigned and bond was set at $25,000.

The officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
