Police Identify Victim in Bridgeport's First Homicide of 2014

Police have identified the woman killed in Bridgeport's first homicide of the year as 28-year-old Tinese Benson.

She was found stabbed to death in a bathroom at 525 Palisade Avenue around 10:15 p.m. Saturday.

Police believe it was a domestic murder and attempted suicide; they found the suspect, 37-year-old Alejandro Velez, of Howard Avenue in Bridgeport, unresponsive with pill bottles nearby, authorities said.

He was barricaded inside the apartment and officers had to force the door open to get to him, according to police.

Velez was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Police obtained an arrest warrant charging Velez with murder. His bond is set at $1 million.

Velez has an extensive criminal record including arson and assault on an officer.

The apartment where the murder took place is rented by Velez's mother, who lives in Florida, police said.
