Dr. Accused of 47 Illegal Drug Prescriptions

Old Saybrook doctor's license to prescribe was pulled last year.

An Old Saybrook was arrested, accused of dozens of felonies for illegally prescribing drugs.

For two years, authorities investigated Dr. Scott W. Houghton, 43, an internal medicine doctor.

On Feb. 2, 2010 the DEA and other law enforcement agencies raided the doctor’s 929 Boston Post Road office and hauled away boxes of evidence. His license to prescribed controlled substances was suspended the next day.

However, Houghton continued to write prescriptions for controlled substances, Old Saybrook police said.

“We have strong reason to believe that Dr. Scott Houghton has prescribed prescription substances including Demerol, Percocet, Valium and Fentanyl for a patient in a frequency that exceeds his own directions for use,” a 2010 news release from the state Department of Consumer Protection, said. “We also believe that Dr. Houghton prescribed other controlled substances for additional patients in a frequency that exceeds his own directions for use.”

Houghton has been charged with 30 counts of illegally prescribing or selling of narcotics, 14 counts of illegally prescribing or selling controlled substance, two counts of failure to maintain controlled substance records with intent and one count of failure to maintain security for controlled substance records with intent.

Houghton was released on a court set bond of $250,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 26.

Houghton was arrested on Tuesday at his Madison home.
