Man Robs Elderly Woman for Heroin: Cops

First he tried to return items he did not buy, police said.

A 21-year-old Hebron man is accused of stealing cash from the hands of a 77-year old woman so he could buy heroin.

David St. Amand tried to return items that he did not buy to Stop and Shop in Middletown around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and store employees told him to leave the market, police said.

St. Amand left the store, but did not leave the premises and was hanging out in the parking lot when an elderly woman left the store, holding cash in her hand.

St. Amand grabbed the cash straight from her hand, injuring her hand in the process, and ran off, Middletown police said.

A witness called police. When police questioned St. Amand, he told to the officer that he was a heroin addict and that is why he tried to return the items and ultimately grabbed the money from the elderly woman so that he could purchase more heroin.

St. Amand was charged with sixth-degree larceny, third-degree robbery and third-degree assault of a victim over the age of 60. The woman did not need medical attention, police said.

Bond was set at $50,000 and St. Armand is due in court on June 30.
